Lonely Planet have posed the question of mythical places that should exist, but don't. And we've all done it... read a book, or seen a movie and wished the places it transported us to were real. I read recently that watchers of
Avatar's Pandora have been so melancholy such a planet doesn't actually exist, they are severely depressed and contemplating suicide (
source). And while, I think that's a little melodramatic... some of the most enduring destinations are indeed fictional (or at the very least inspired by real places the author had been to).
The top contenders include Lewis'
Narnia, Baum's
Oz and none more so thought out than Tolkien's
Middle-Earth... what with its sprawling landscapes, hill-top ruins and passionate population. But my thoughts turn to two other war-torn planets championed to freedom by a brother and sister team... both the most powerful man and woman in the universe, respectfully.
Put me on a spaceship with Queen Marlena, and send me to
Eternia... but only as a pit-stop, because I want to settle with the Great Rebellion smack bang in the deep enchanted forest known as the
Whispering Woods, on She-Ra's planet
Etheria.
In my search for imagery to display with this post, I subsequently came across what I'd imagine would be cinematic depictions of the He-Man plight. Perhaps
Nebezial is working on some concept art for a possible 3D film trilogy I could possibly develop suicidal tendencies towards. Because you just know the possibilities of packing up my
MOTU DVD's and moving there is simply intangible.
